Service Description
Service Description:The underachievement of African Caribbean pupils has been a recurrent theme in education for a while now. Consequently, a number of initiatives have been undertaken both nationally and regionally. Locally, this concern is shared by members of the West Indian Community, hence the centre's involvement in various education projects such as a Saturday School and the Summer Scheme. These provide children with positive role models while engaging them in active social learning.
The Derby West Indian Community Association Summer School is an annual education programme of events and provides varied curricular activities for the young people who attend the school. The summer school provides respite for parents and a safe environment for young people during the school holidays. The summer school can accommodate 50 young people aged 8 to 18. Qualified staff and volunteers deliver the programme of activities and it is open to inspection by OFSTED.
