Service Description

Service Description:
A mainstream Community Junior School with 360 pupils on roll.
Set in inner city Derby, the school is a Victorian build with split-level access. All upper KS2 classes are accessed via staircases. Cloakrooms for children are downstairs. There is vehicular and disabled access to the playground and car park. Two classrooms are equipped with a hearing loop.

We make arrangements to visit local infants when pupils transition to our year three classes.
We also liaise with each of the secondary schools children transition to.
At Pear Tree Junior School we have adopted a whole school approach to SEND policy and practice. Pupils
identified as having SEND are, as far as practicable, fully integrated into mainstream classes. Every effort
is made to ensure that they have full access to the learning curriculum and are integrated into all aspects
of the school. The SEND Code of Practice 2014 makes it clear that all teachers are teachers of pupils with
special educational needs.
All teachers are responsible for identifying pupils with SEND and, in collaboration with the SENDCO, will
ensure that these pupils requiring different or additional support are identified at an early stage. All
teachers, in collaboration with support staff, complete a termly Teacher Initial Concern Form that is then
discussed with the SENDCO at planning meetings. Pupils with SEND are identified by using the Derby City
Council criteria of Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Sensory and Physical and Social and Emotional Mental Health Difficulties. In addition to this we have an “open door” policy for parents and
teachers to contact the SENDCO with any concerns.
