Service Description
Service Description:We are an inclusive, mainstream Catholic Primary School, currently with 228 children on roll. We have 1 class per year group.
An essential aspect of the strong Catholic ethos on which our school is founded is that we share the Church’s few that: Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children.
We aim to provide a school environment which is at once happy, caring and secure, yet at the same time one which challenges the children to step out of their ‘comfort zone’, strive for excellence and make the most of their unique God given talents.
We have a large flat playground, and a large flat playing field, with sloped paths to access classrooms.
Admissions come through Derby City central admissions arrangements.
We hold 3 mornings when children new to Reception or year 3 can visit, the first morning with parents, and then 2 for just the children. We also do home visits prior to children starting in September.
We also liaise with the local secondary schools children transition to. We have especially close links with St Benedict’s.
We operate a graduated response to the identification of children’s Special Educational Needs. More information about this can be found on the SEND Information Report, which can be found on the school website.
Termly meetings with the child’s class teacher allows the parent opportunities to discuss their child’s progress and attainment. Additional meetings are arranged three times a year for parents of children with SEND plans, to discuss and review targets and support. These meetings may include the school SENDCo and/or Learning Mentor.
All class teachers differentiate teaching and learning tasks to suit the needs of the learner. Risk assessments will be written and shared with parents when they are needed and we can write a personal evacuation plan if that is required. We successfully support pupils with additional needs at St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy, and ensure they are included in extracurricular activities such as clubs and discos. We work closely with Local Authority Specialist Teachers from STePS where a child has a specific need such as a Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment or Autism; we also work with the Educational Psychologists when their advice is needed.
Our school Senco has been awarded the National Senco Award and coordinates support for children with additional needs in school.
