About the service

Service Description:
Our mission is to empower women to lead more independent lives. We aim to reduce economic inequality, improve mental well being and facilitate personal development. To do this, we offer support and guidance, signposting, counselling, legal advice and social activities and courses.

We provide a safe and non-judgmental environment for all women regardless of situation or background. Our services are completely confidential.

We a registered charity, charity no. 1135743

Our mental health support includes counselling, a support group, therapeutic and confidence building activities and complementary therapies.

We currently take referrals from females aged 18 and over. A small number of our counselling clients access the service from outside of the county but the majority come from Derby and Derbyshire.

Making a referral is very simple; just send us an email with your full name, address, telephone number and whether we are okay to leave messages on this number to counselling@derbywomenscentre.co.uk. You will then be added to the waiting list as soon as your email is received by our Counselling Coordinator. Alternatively, please call us on 01332 341633 to give these details to a member of staff and be added to the waiting list.

There is currently a 12 week turnaround time after being added to the waiting list. After this, you will be invited to come into Derby Women’s Centre for an initial assessment with our Counselling Coordinator to discuss your needs in more detail (including determining whether counselling support is the right option for you) and to then be assigned a counsellor.

We offer support to women who have experienced any form of domestic violence. Our domestic violence services include the Freedom Programme ( a support group aimed at survivors of domestic abuse) and counselling support. Less obviously, our range of social and creative activities can help women who have experienced domestic abuse to rebuild confidence and self esteem, reduce isolation and make new friends in a relaxed and friendly setting. All of our services are confidential and non-judgemental.

We offer a range of advice services at Derby Women’s Centre. We have a specialist support worker who can help with debt, benefit and housing issues for domestic abuse, and we offer free family law support in partnership with Nelsons Solicitors. We also signpost to other organisations when appropriate. We have staff members who can speak Urdu and Punjabi.
